MAINT. TECH- APPRENTICE

JOB SUMMARY:

 

The Maintenance Technician Apprentice will be a developmental/training role leading to a full-time position as a Maintenance Technician – This apprenticeship program is an entry point into the skilled multi-craft Maintenance technician position with a training duration of approximately 12-24 months.  

 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • The duties will vary but generally the apprenticeship program is a mixed approach to learning the trade through class-room training, on-line learning and on-the-job shadowing and mentoring with a more experienced Maintenance Techs.
  • Responsible for performing all duties and activities to create a safe, environmentally compliant workplace that produces high quality products in a cost-efficient manner.

  • Will learn skills, knowledge and develop abilities within the multi-craft trade including but not limited to:  Welding, metal cutting, metal fabrication, plumbing, pipe-fitting, rigging, basic electrical/electronics, mobile equipment repairs, mechanical repairs, use of shop and hand tools, lubrication, HVAC, use of blue-prints, wiring diagrams, etc. during the course of this apprenticeship program.
  • As training progresses, work will be assigned to include but not limited to:
  • Performs preventive/predictive maintenance inspections and service on industrial equipment, mobile machinery, and facilities.
  • Thoroughly cleans machines and machine parts, removing parts and reinstalling, as necessary.
  • Oils and lubricates moving parts on machines to ensure long-lasting & effective performance.
  • Records and reports damaged, worn, or broken parts.
  • Orders and installs replacement parts such as filters for machines.
  • Helps identify the causes of unexpected breakdowns of machines.
  • Assists maintenance Technicians to Repair broken machines quickly and efficiently.
  • Prepares reports documenting work performed (written and typed in SAP system).
  • Cleans, organizes, inventories, stocks, and otherwise maintains shop areas, parts, tools, and filter/lubrication/oil supplies utilizing Lean/5S methods.
  • Coordinates with Supervisors/managers to schedule regular PM maintenance on machines.
  • Assists with facility clean-up (inside and outside) including operation of vacuum truck and sweepers.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

 

  • Mechanically inclined with great problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to learn- through on-line courses, class-room instruction as well as on-the-job experiential learning.  Must have strong learning aptitude and desire to learn.
  • Works well independently and with others.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Organized with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and heavy industrial environment.
  • Ability to learn how to read blueprints and schematic diagrams.
  • Must have willingness and ability to train others including operators, less experienced maintenance crews and contractors.
  • Must have basic computer and typing skills.
  • Must complete and maintain any assigned company required training and certifications.
  • Ability and willingness to train, develop and continuously learn and advance to higher level maintenance technician is preferred for this position.  Ideally, this position is entry level into maintenance with progression to higher level.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

HS diploma or equivalent required.  Some vocational, technical or community college with related coursework or equivalent experience, preferred but not required.  3-5 years’ experience working in a heavy industrial environment preferred.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Prolonged periods standing and walking.
  • Able to bend, stretch, push, pull, and move as needed to reach, clean, and service machinery.
  • Must be able to visually inspect machines.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to climb stairs/ladders on a regular basis.
  • Ability to work in all outdoor weather conditions.
  • Must be capable of operating all manufacturing and mobile equipment including loaders, forklifts, scissor lifts, etc.
  • Must be able to work wearing appropriate safety PPE including respirators.
