PROJECT ENGINEER
Job Summary:
The Project Engineer will coordinate and manage engineering and technical development projects. Reports directly to the Engineering Manager.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Work closely with production/Engineering/maintenance to design, develop, and manage engineering projects and process improvements for the facility.
- Responsible to perform all duties and activities in a manner that is fully supportive of the company values, and its mission to create a safe, environmentally sustainable, high-quality, and cost-efficient operation.

- Collaborates with project staff to create a strategic action plan and cost estimates of materials, time, labor, and other resources required to complete the project.
- Facilitates and contributes to the development of project plans and designs.
- Utilizes CAD or similar software to make engineering drawings and designs.
- Recommends and/or analyzes materials, equipment, and practices used in the project.
- Assesses the competence, capabilities, resources, and financial status of vendors.
- Supervises progress of development project.
- Compares the actual cost of development project to estimates.
- Collaborates with design group to change plans if problems arise.
- Analyzes equipment, systems, processes, and systems to identify modifications to improve efficiency, increase quality, and reduce costs.
- Prepares periodic progress and cost reports for leadership.
- Ensures compliance with codes, guidelines, best practices, and policies.
- Collaborates with the operations department to identify and troubleshoot problems.
- Collaborates with project engineers from other plants to share problems and solutions.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Working knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid flow operations
- Must have excellent project management skills (Including use of project management software applications such as Microsoft Project Planning)
- Work well in a cross-functional work setting, including corporate engineering, other plant engineers, production, environmental, safety, procurement, maintenance, etc.
- Strong technical/mechanical skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Assist in prioritizing tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, ERP and related software.
- Understanding of quality standards and health, safety & Environmental regulations
- Willingness and ability to work alternate schedules during on-going projects/training
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent budgeting and cost containment skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Education and Experience:
- Industrial or project engineering degree preferred. Industrial, chemical, manufacturing, mechanical or related technical discipline required- preferred experience with Waelz Kiln technology.
- 3-5 years of experience in an industrial environment (Waelz kiln) preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- This is a hands-on project engineering role and requires someone who enjoys working in the plant setting.
- Must be able to lift 50+ pounds at times.
- Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization’s facilities which involves significant walking and climbing of stairs/ladders.
- Must be willing to work in extreme work conditions that are often hot, cold, dirty as well as working at heights on occasion.
- Must be able to work wearing appropriate safety PPE including respirators on regular basis.
